Speeding is the most common traffic offence in Belgium. The fine you receive depends on three factors: the type of road zone, how much you exceeded the limit, and your personal circumstances. A standard radar correction of 6 km/h is always deducted.

Speed zones in Belgium

  • 30 km/h zones — residential areas, school zones (applies to most of Brussels since 2021)
  • 50 km/h zones — standard urban speed limit
  • 70 km/h zones — semi-urban roads
  • 90 km/h zones — regional roads outside built-up areas
  • 120 km/h zones — motorways

Radar correction: Belgian law requires a correction of 6 km/h to be deducted from the measured speed. A speed camera in a 50 km/h zone therefore only triggers at 56 km/h or above.

Can I contest a speeding fine?

Yes. The most common grounds are: you were not driving at the time, the camera was not properly calibrated, its positioning was non-compliant, or there is a factual error in the police report.

Important: paying the on-the-spot fine is treated as an admission of guilt. If you intend to contest, do not pay — contact a lawyer immediately.
